🇮🇳 Why India Loves Arimaa
India has a deep-rooted love for abstract strategy — from Chaturanga (the ancestor of chess) to Pachisi. Arimaa fits right into that groove. It’s a game where raw brainpower beats rote memorisation, and every match is a fresh puzzle. Radio Arimao captures that spirit: “Jitna dimaag, utna dum” (the more you think, the stronger you play).
Our community includes college students in Bangalore, software engineers in Pune, and traditional toy makers in Varanasi — all connected by the love of Arimaa. The game’s four-step move system and animal hierarchy (Elephant, Camel, Horse, Dog, Cat, Rabbit) make it endlessly fascinating.
🎲 How to Play Arimaa — The Radio Arimao Way
Learning Arimaa is like learning a new language — but once it clicks, you’ll never look back. Here’s your Radio Arimao quick-start guide. For a full deep dive, check out our dedicated Arimaa How To Play page.
🐘 The Basics
Arimaa is a two-player board game played on a 8×8 grid. Each player controls 16 pieces representing different animals. The goal? Get one of your rabbits to the opponent’s home row — or trap all their rabbits!
🐇 Piece Hierarchy (strongest to weakest)
- Elephant ( strongest ) — can push/pull any piece
- Camel — can push/pull all except Elephant
- Horse — can push/pull Dog, Cat, Rabbit
- Dog — can push/pull Cat, Rabbit
- Cat — can push/pull Rabbit
- Rabbit — the goal-scorer; weakest but most important
Each turn, you can make up to 4 moves (steps). You can move your pieces forward, backward, left, or right — but rabbits cannot move backward (they only march forward!). Pieces can also push or pull enemy pieces if they are stronger. Thalaiva level strategy!
🔥 Pro Tip from Radio Arimao
“In Arimaa, tempo is everything. Don’t just move pieces — create threats that force your opponent to react. A good Indian-style ‘chāl’ (move) is one that gives you two options while your opponent can only block one.” — Arjun ‘ElephantMaster’ Nair, Radio Arimao featured player

♟️ Arimaa Chess Pieces & Board — Anatomy of the Game
Understanding the pieces and the board is crucial. The Arimaa board has 8×8 squares with four trap squares at (3,3), (3,6), (6,3), and (6,6). If a piece steps onto a trap square with no friendly piece adjacent, it’s captured! 💥
📦 What You Get in a Standard Arimaa Set
- 1 wooden Arimaa Chess Board (folding, with trap markings)
- 32 pieces (16 Gold, 16 Silver) — Elephant, Camel, 2 Horses, 2 Dogs, 2 Cats, 8 Rabbits

🧾 Quick Reference: Piece Count & Movement
| Piece | Count per Side | Can Push/Pull | Special |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🐘 Elephant | 1 | All pieces | Strongest; cannot be pushed |
| 🐪 Camel | 1 | All except Elephant | Second strongest |
| 🐴 Horse | 2 | Dog, Cat, Rabbit | Versatile attacker |
| 🐕 Dog | 2 | Cat, Rabbit | Good defender |
| 🐈 Cat | 2 | Rabbit | Light & quick |
| 🐇 Rabbit | 8 | None | Goal scorer; cannot retreat |
Pro tip: The Elephant is your kingpin — never trade it lightly! A common Indian strategy is the “Gaj-Fauj” (Elephant Army) where you use the Elephant to clear a path for your Rabbits. Learn more about Arimaa Chess Pieces.
🧠 Advanced Arimaa Strategy — Radio Arimao Exclusive
Ready to level up? These exclusive strategies come from hours of analysis and interviews with Radio Arimao community champions. Yeh strategy koi nahi batayega! (No one else will tell you this!)
🔥 1. The ‘Delhi Wall’ Defence
Popularised by players in Delhi NCR, this setup places Camels and Horses behind a wall of Dogs and Cats, forcing the opponent to overcommit. Once they do, you counter-attack with your Elephant. It’s a classic Indian defensive mindset — let them exhaust themselves, then strike.
🎯 2. Rabbit Star Invasion
Sacrifice a Rabbit early to create a distraction on one flank, then rush 3–4 Rabbits on the opposite side. This “misdirection” tactic works brilliantly against aggressive players. We’ve seen it win games in under 30 moves!
🐘 3. Elephant-Camel Tag Team
Keep your Elephant and Camel within 2 squares of each other. This creates a mobile fortress — the Elephant protects the Camel, and the Camel can pick off weaker enemy pieces. Radio Arimao calls this the “Gaadi-Jodi” (Vehicle Duo).
For even more advanced tactics, see our Arimaa How To Play section — it includes 10+ annotated game records from Indian tournaments.
📊 Player Interview: “Arimaa Changed How I Think”
“I started playing Arimaa during my engineering days in Hyderabad. The game taught me patience, calculation, and creativity. Radio Arimao gave me a platform to share my strategies and learn from others. It’s not just a game — it’s a mind sport.” — Priya ‘RabbitQueen’ Sharma, Radio Arimao contributor & 2x National Arimaa finalist
Priya’s favourite opening is the “Kolkata Gambit” — a risky but powerful sequence where you advance two Rabbits and a Cat on the first turn, daring the opponent to trap them while you develop your back rank. 🔥 Exclusive

❓ Frequently Asked Questions — Radio Arimao Answers
🤔 Is Arimaa harder than chess?
In Arimaa, there’s no opening book — every position is unique. Many players find it more creative than chess. The branching factor is higher because you can move any of your pieces in any order (up to 4 steps). Radio Arimao recommends it for players who love pure strategy without memorisation.
🎒 Where can I buy Arimaa pieces in India?
We recommend the Arimaa Pieces page — it lists verified sellers in Jaipur, Chennai, and Kolkata. You can also download the Arimaa Chess Pieces Pdf to 3D-print your own set!
📡 What does “Radio Arimao” mean?
Radio Arimao is a metaphor — like a radio frequency that broadcasts Arimaa knowledge to the world. It’s our way of saying “tune in, play smart, stay connected.” The name also pays homage to the community radio tradition in rural India, where information and stories are shared live.
🔄 How do traps work in Arimaa?
A piece on a trap square is safe only if a friendly piece is adjacent (orthogonally). If no friendly piece is next to it, the piece is captured. You can also push or pull an enemy piece into a trap — that’s the main way to eliminate opponent pieces. Master this and you’ll dominate!
